Since time immemorial
communication is considered as an important tool of relationship and individual
unique adjustment with the environment. Therefore all the early scholars deemed
it a tool vital to facilitate learning and critical thinking. It was declared as
a sort of mechanism by which a man can improve the safety and quality of life.
In this connection, communication mostly remained centered on how people could
use messages to generate meanings within and across all kinds of backgrounds,
cultures, channels and media.
In today’s world, an unceasing bombardment of incoming message technology has
made it possible to meet anyone, anyplace at anytime and there are more and more
communication options available to the people, from cell phones and text
messages to a learning management system .
Today, the Internet is a public, concerted, and self-sustaining facility
accessible to hundreds and millions of people worldwide. Physically, the
Internet uses a percentage of the entire resources of the currently existing
public telecommunication networks. For many Internet users, electronic mail
(e-mail) has practically replaced the Postal Service for short written
transactions. Electronic mail is the most widely used application on the Net.
More recently, Internet telephony hardware and software allows real-time voice
conversations. Individuals are increasingly used to socializing with the other
individuals over the cyberspace. These online communities are increasingly being
employed by people in parliamentary procedure to put across with friends, meet
fresh people, and even to find their perfect mate.
Although sites such as The Face Book and MySpace are really useful in building
and sustaining relationships, they lack the physical fact of a friendship. This
online directory connects people through at different colleges and universities
through social networks. The surveys in the recent past notes that Face book is
the largest networking site. Members on Face Book can make profiles for
themselves with pictures and carrying amounts of personal information, browse
profiles of friends or people, send e-mails, and more recently, use it as a
picture storage system.
The use of Face book is standard, with many people logging onto the social
networking website multiple times each day.
People these days prefer to communicate with their friends on face book rather
than on phone or on intimate and face to face basis even to the extent that when
the nature of the tropics is more personal and private one.
Similarly, face book usage can lead to the feelings of jealousy among friends
and leads to a social standing among friends based on friends’ Face book
activity.
In Pakistan it is often related to negative feedback and cyber bullying by
cultist-cum-politico trolls and youth are often being involved with negative
communication, either as the sender or recipient.
Several research studies in the west have discovered that the extreme exposure
of face book can affect interpersonal relationships. Many studies also find it
of having both positive and negative effects. One of the most highly touted
positive aspects of Face book is the fact that it allows users to maintain
contact and sustain friendships with those who are physically far away.
Conversely, it is also clear that Face book usage introduces new issues and
complications within friendships.
This to some extent also reinforces the diplomatic and unclear philosophical
perspective where people lament that technological advancement can both help and
hinder interpersonal relationship.
To be conclusive of the topic we can say that face book has gradually become a
constant in the world of interpersonal communication. As technology advances and
becomes more ingrained in daily life, the users too will become aware of the
possible impacts of this medium, and will start using it for the constructive
and durable interpersonal communication and relationship.
