Imran bin Husain narrated that: The Prophet was asked about Ash-Shafi, so he said: “It is As-Salat, some of it is Shaf (even) and some of it is Witr (odd).”

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَفْصٍ عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، وَأَبُو دَاوُدَ، قَالَا:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ عِصَامٍ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سُئِلَ عَنِ الشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ ؟ فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ هِيَ الصَّلَاةُ بَعْضُهَا شَفْعٌ وَبَعْضُهَا وِتْرٌ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏لَا نَعْرِفُهُ إِلَّا مِنْ حَدِيثِ قَتَادَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَدْ رَوَاهُ خَالِدُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ الْحُدَّانِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ قَتَادَةَ أَيْضًا.

عمران بن حصین رضی الله عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ   نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے «شفع» اور «وتر» کے بارے میں پوچھا گیا کہ «شفع» ( جفت ) اور «الوتر» ( طاق ) سے کیا مراد ہے؟ آپ نے فرمایا: ”اس سے مراد نماز ہے، بعض نمازیں «شفع» ( جفت ) ہیں اور بعض نمازیں «وتر» ( طاق ) ہیں“۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: ۱- یہ حدیث غریب ہے، ۲- ہم اسے صرف قتادہ کی روایت سے جانتے ہیں، ۳- خالد بن قیس حدانی نے بھی اسے قتادہ سے روایت کیا ہے۔
