Narrated `Abdullah bin `Amr bin Al-`As: Once Allah's Apostle came to me, and then he narrated the whole narration, i.e. your guest has a right on you, and your wife has a right on you. I then asked about the fasting of David. The Prophet replied, Half of the year, (i.e. he used to fast on every alternate day).

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيٌّ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو سَلَمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا ، قَالَ : دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ يَعْنِي إِنَّ لِزَوْرِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَقًّا ، وَإِنَّ لِزَوْجِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَقًّا ، فَقُلْتُ : وَمَا صَوْمُ دَاوُدَ ؟ قَالَ : نِصْفُ الدَّهْرِ .

ہم سے اسحاق نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ ہم کو ہارون بن اسماعیل نے خبر دی، کہا کہ ہم سے علی نے بیان کیا، ان سے یحییٰ نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ مجھ سے ابوسلمہ نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ   مجھ سے عبداللہ بن عمرو بن عاص رضی اللہ عنہما نے بیان کیا، آپ نے فرمایا کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم میرے یہاں تشریف لائے۔ پھر انہوں نے پوری حدیث بیان کی، یعنی تمہارے ملاقاتیوں کا بھی تم پر حق ہے اور تمہاری بیوی کا بھی تم پر حق ہے۔ اس پر میں نے پوچھا اور داؤد علیہ السلام کا روزہ کیسا تھا؟ تو آپ نے فرمایا کہ ایک دن روزہ رکھنا اور ایک دن بے روزہ رہنا صوم داؤدی ہے۔
