Narrated `Aisha: The people used to fast on the day of 'Ashura' before fasting in Ramadan was prescribed but when (the order of compulsory fasting in) Ramadan was revealed, it was up to one to fast on it (i.e. 'Ashura') or not.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ , حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ , عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ , عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا : كَانَ عَاشُورَاءُ يُصَامُ قَبْلَ رَمَضَانَ ، فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ رَمَضَانُ , قَالَ : مَنْ شَاءَ صَامَ وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَفْطَرَ .

ہم سے عبداللہ بن محمد نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم سے ابن عیینہ نے بیان کیا، ان سے زہری نے، ان سے عروہ نے اور ان سے عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے کہ   عاشوراء کا روزہ رمضان کے روزوں کے حکم سے پہلے رکھا جاتا تھا۔ پھر جب رمضان کے روزوں کا حکم نازل ہوا تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ جس کا جی چاہے عاشوراء کا روزہ رکھے اور جس کا جی چاہے نہ رکھے۔
