Narrated Um Salama: The husband of a lady died and her eyes became sore and the people mentioned her story to the Prophet They asked him whether it was permissible for her to use kohl as her eyes were exposed to danger. He said, Previously, when one of you was bereaved by a husband she would stay in her dirty clothes in a bad unhealthy house (for one year), and when a dog passed by, she would throw a globe of dung. No, (she should observe the prescribed period Idda) for four months and ten days.'

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي حُمَيْدُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ زَيْنَبَ ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا : أَنَّ امْرَأَةً تُوُفِّيَ زَوْجُهَا فَاشْتَكَتْ عَيْنَهَا ، فَذَكَرُوهَا لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَذَكَرُوا لَهُ الْكُحْلَ وَأَنَّهُ يُخَافُ عَلَى عَيْنِهَا ، فَقَالَ لَقَدْ كَانَتْ إِحْدَاكُنَّ تَمْكُثُ فِي بَيْتِهَا فِي شَرِّ أَحْلَاسِهَا أَوْ فِي أَحْلَاسِهَا فِي شَرِّ بَيْتِهَا ، فَإِذَا مَرَّ كَلْبٌ رَمَتْ بَعْرَةً فَهَلَّا أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا .

ہم سے مسدد نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم سے یحییٰ بن سعیدقطان نے بیان کیا، ان سے شعبہ نے بیان کیا کہ مجھ سے حمید بن نافع نے بیان کیا، ان سے زینب رضی اللہ عنہا نے اور ان سے ام سلمہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے کہ   ایک عورت کے شوہر کا انتقال ہو گیا ( زمانہ عدت میں ) اس عورت کی آنکھ دکھنے لگی تو لوگوں نے اس کا ذکر نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے کیا۔ ان لوگوں نے نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے سامنے سرمہ کا ذکر کیا اور یہ کہ ( اگر سرمہ آنکھ میں نہ لگایا تو ) ان کی آنکھ کے متعلق خطرہ ہے۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ ( زمانہ جاہلیت میں ) عدت گزارنے والی تم عورتوں کے اپنے گھر میں سب سے بدتر کپڑے میں پڑا رہنا پڑتا تھا یا ( آپ نے یہ فرمایا کہ ) اپنے کپڑوں میں گھر کے سب سے بدتر حصہ میں پڑا رہنا پڑتا تھا پھر جب کوئی کتا گزرتا تو اس پر وہ مینگنی پھینک کر مارتی ( تب عدت سے باہر ہوتی ) پس چار مہینے دس دن تک سرمہ نہ لگاؤ۔
