Zaid b. Thabit reported that the Messenger of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) made an apartment in the mosque of mats, and he observed in it prayers for many nights till people began to gather around him, and the rest of the hadith is the same but with this addition: Had this (Nafl) prayer become obligatory for you, you would not be able to observe it.

و حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ عُقْبَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا النَّضْرِ عَنْ بُسْرِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اتَّخَذَ حُجْرَةً فِي الْمَسْجِدِ مِنْ حَصِيرٍ فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِيهَا لَيَالِيَ حَتَّى اجْتَمَعَ إِلَيْهِ نَاسٌ فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ وَزَادَ فِيهِ وَلَوْ كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمْ مَا قُمْتُمْ بِهِ

  موسیٰ بن عقبہ نے ہمیں حدیث بیان کی ، کہا : میں نے ابو نضرسے سنا انھوں نے بسر بن سعید سے اور انھوں نے حضرت زید بن ثابت رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت کی کہ نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے مسجد میں چٹائی سے ایک حجرہ بنوایا اور آپ نے اس میں چند راتیں نماز پڑھی حتیٰ کہ آپ کے پاس لو گ جمع ہو گئے ۔ ۔ ۔ پھر مذکورہ بالا روایت بیان کی اور اس میں یہ اضافہ کیا کہ ( آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فر ما یا : ) " اگر تم پر نماز فرض کر دی گئی تو تم ( سب ) اس کی پابندی نہیں کر سکو گے ۔ " ( یہ حجرہ اعتکاف کے لیے تھا ۔ )
