حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيل بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْهُذَلِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ يُونُسَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ عُبَادٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قُلْتُلِعَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَخْبِرْنَا عَنْ مَسِيرِكَ هَذَا أَعَهْدٌ عَهِدَهُ إِلَيْكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمْ رَأْيٌ رَأَيْتَهُ ؟ فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مَا عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِشَيْءٍ وَلَكِنَّهُ رَأْيٌ رَأَيْتُهُ .

Urdu Translation

قیس بن عباد کہتے ہیں کہ   میں نے علی رضی اللہ عنہ سے کہا: ہمیں آپ ( معاویہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے جنگ کے لیے ) اپنی اس روانگی کے متعلق بتائیے کہ آیا رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کا کوئی حکم ہے جو انہوں نے آپ کو دیا ہے یا آپ کا اپنا خیال ہے جسے آپ درست سمجھتے ہیں، وہ بولے: مجھے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے کوئی حکم نہیں دیا بلکہ یہ میری رائے ہے۔

English Translation

Qais bin Abbad said: I said to ‘All (Allah be pleased with him): Tell me about this march of yours. Is this an order that the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم had given you, or is this your opinion that you have? He said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم did not give me any order; but this is an opinion that I have.
