Narrated Abu Hurairah: Suhayl ibn Abu Salih said: I went out with my father to Syria. The people passed by the cloisters in which there were Christians and began to salute them. My father said: Do not give them salutation first, for Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم as saying: Do not salute them (Jews and Christians) first, and when you meet them on the road, force them to go to the narrowest part of it.

حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ،‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ،‏‏‏‏ عَنْ سُهَيْلِ بْنِ أَبِي صَالِحٍ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ خَرَجْتُ مَعَ أَبِي إِلَى الشَّامِ،‏‏‏‏ فَجَعَلُوا يَمُرُّونَ بِصَوَامِعَ فِيهَا نَصَارَى فَيُسَلِّمُونَ عَلَيْهِمْ،‏‏‏‏ فَقَالَ أَبِي:‏‏‏‏ لَا تَبْدَءُوهُمْ بِالسَّلَامِ،‏‏‏‏ فَإِنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ،‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ لَا تَبْدَءُوهُمْ بِالسَّلَامِ،‏‏‏‏ وَإِذَا لَقِيتُمُوهُمْ فِي الطَّرِيقِ،‏‏‏‏ فَاضْطَرُّوهُمْ إِلَى أَضْيَقِ الطَّرِيقِِ .

سہیل بن ابوصالح کہتے ہیں کہ   میں اپنے والد کے ساتھ شام گیا تو وہاں لوگوں ( یعنی قافلے والوں ) کا گزر نصاریٰ کے گرجا گھروں کے پاس سے ہونے لگا تو لوگ انہیں ( اور ان کے پجاریوں کو ) سلام کرنے لگے تو میرے والد نے کہا: تم انہیں سلام کرنے میں پہل نہ کرو کیونکہ ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے ہم سے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی یہ حدیث بیان کی ہے، آپ نے فرمایا ہے: انہیں ( یعنی یہود و نصاریٰ کو ) سلام کرنے میں پہل نہ کرو، اور جب تم انہیں راستے میں ملو تو انہیں تنگ راستہ پر چلنے پر مجبور کرو ( یعنی ان پر اپنا دباؤ ڈالے رکھو وہ کونے کنارے سے ہو کر چلیں ) ۔
