Narrated Abu Hurairah: A man asked the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم: Messenger of Allah, we travel on the sea and take a small quantity of water with us. If we use this for ablution, we would suffer from thirst. Can we perform ablution with sea water? The Messenger صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم replied: Its water is pure and what dies in it is lawful food.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ مَالِكٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ مِنْ آلِ ابْنِ الْأَزْرَقِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّ الْمُغِيرَةَ بْنَ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ وَهُوَ مِنْ بَنِي عَبْدِ الدَّارِ أَخْبَرَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏إِنَّا نَرْكَبُ الْبَحْرَ وَنَحْمِلُ مَعَنَا الْقَلِيلَ مِنَ الْمَاءِ فَإِنْ تَوَضَّأْنَا بِهِ عَطِشْنَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَفَنَتَوَضَّأُ بِمَاءِ الْبَحْرِ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ هُوَ الطَّهُورُ مَاؤُهُ الْحِلُّ مَيْتَتُهُ .

قبیلہ بنو عبدالدار کے ایک فرد مغیرہ بن ابی بردہ بیان کرتے ہیں کہ ۔   انہوں نے ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ کو کہتے ہوئے سنا کہ ( عبداللہ مدلجی نامی ) ایک شخص نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے سوال کیا: اللہ کے رسول! ہم سمندر کا سفر کرتے ہیں اور اپنے ساتھ تھوڑا پانی لے جاتے ہیں اگر ہم اس سے وضو کر لیں تو پیاسے رہ جائیں گے، کیا ایسی صورت میں ہم سمندر کے پانی سے وضو کر سکتے ہیں؟ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: اس کا پانی بذات خود پاک اور دوسرے کو پاک کرنے والا ہے، اور اس کا مردار حلال ہے
