The Night Journey — How Shab e Meraj Happened
The journey is made up of two parts:
- Isra: The night journey from Makkah to Jerusalem.

Part One — Isra: The angel Jibreel (AS) came to the Prophet ﷺ and brought him Buraq, a swift heavenly mount. Riding it, he ﷺ traveled from Masjid al-Haram in Makkah to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, covering the distance in moments. There he ﷺ led all the earlier prophets in prayer before continuing his journey.
Part Two — Meraj: From Masjid al-Aqsa the Prophet ﷺ ascended through the seven heavens meeting a different prophet at each level:
- First heaven - Prophet Adam (AS)
- Second heaven - Prophet Isa (AS) and Prophet Yahya (AS)
- Third heaven - Prophet Yusuf (AS)
- Fourth heaven - Prophet Idris (AS)
- Fifth heaven - Prophet Haroon (AS)
- Sixth heaven - Prophet Musa (AS)
- Seventh heaven - Prophet Ibrahim (AS)
Beyond the seventh heaven, he ﷺ visited Bait al-Mamur and reached Sidrat al-Muntaha the ultimate boundary where he drew closest to Allah and received the command for the five daily prayers.
Did the Prophet (ﷺ) See Allah During Isra and Miraj?
When the Prophet (ﷺ) reached Sidrat al-Muntaha, he drew close to the Divine Presence, but he did not see Allah with his physical eyes. This is supported by Aishah (R.A.), who narrated in Sahih Bukhari (7380) that anyone claiming the Prophet saw his Lord is mistaken, referencing the Quranic verse: "No vision can grasp Him" (Surah Al-Anaam 6:103).
Major Gifts Given During Isra and Miraj
The Prophet (ﷺ) was blessed with three main gifts on this night:
- The Five Daily Prayers: Carrying the full reward of fifty prayers (Sahih Bukhari: 7517).
- The Final Verses: The concluding verses of Surah Al-Baqarah.
- A Divine Promise: That the sins of his Ummah would be forgiven, as long as they did not associate partners with Allah (Sahih Muslim: 173).
How the Five Daily Prayers Were Ordained?
- During his ascension, 50 daily prayers were initially prescribed.
- On his way back, Prophet Musa (A.S.) advised him to ask for a reduction because the Ummah would find it too difficult.
- After the Prophet (ﷺ) went back and forth, the prayers were reduced to five, while Allah graciously kept the reward equal to fifty.
