Shab e-Meraj History

Shab-e-Meraj, or the Night of Ascension, is a pivotal event in Islamic history. It occurred in the 11th year of Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) prophethood, approximately a year before the Hijra (migration) to Medina. According to Islamic tradition, during this miraculous night, the Angel Jibreel (AS) transported the Prophet (PBUH) from the Kaaba in Mecca to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. From there, the Prophet (SAW) ascended through the heavens, meeting various prophets, including Musa, Ibrahim, Isa, Yusuf, Adam, Idris, and Haroon (as) eventually reaching the Divine presence.

In the celestial journey, Allah bestowed upon the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) the command of the five daily prayers (Salah). This night signifies the Prophet's (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) unparalleled closeness to Allah and serves as a testament to his esteemed position as the Seal of the Prophets. Shab-e-Meraj, observed on the 27th night of the Islamic month of Rajab, remains a source of inspiration for Muslims, emphasizing the importance of faith, prayer, and the spiritual connection between the earthly and heavenly realms.

Shab e Meraj also called Lailat al Miraj and Isra Wal Miraj, a historical night event much celebrated and respected in Islamic history is believed to be an important physical as well as a spiritual journey in the history of Islam. The lailatul Miraj / Shab e Meraj was a remarkable ascension of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) to seven heavens which he took on the back of an animal Buraq.

Surah Al Isra in the Qur’an has mentioned the event of Mi’raj while details of the event are clearer in Ahadith. The last Prophet of Islam, the Hazrat Muhammad (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) traveled on the back of a winged mule-like beast also known as Buraq.

The reports, teachings, deeds, and quotations of Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) were later explained the event happenings in detail after Surah Al Isra mentioned the event of Mi’raj. Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) traveled to the farthest mosque which was Al-Aqsa Mosque where he led all other prophets of Islam in prayer. Before he started off his journey, Jibreel, the angel of God, came down to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) while he was sleeping and had his heart washed with pure waters. The journey to the heavens on the back of Buraq is known as Mi’raj which means Ascension in a literal sense. The event of Shab e Meraj took place in the year 612 as per record.
