Ingredients
  1. 8 oz. whole wheat flour
  2. pinch of salt
  3. ¼ pint (U.S. 2/3 cup) plus 2 tablespoons water melted butter
Method
  • Sieve flour and salt onto a pastry board or a large plate. Make a hole in the centre of the flour and add 8 tablespoons of the water. Knead well for 15 minutes to form soft dough. Add the rest of the water gradually, kneading another 10 minutes. Leave to stand for 30 minutes. Divide into 10-12 portions and roll out into thin round pancakes. Meanwhile heat a griddle or heavy frying pan then cook one chappati at a time. Press to flatten when small blisters appear on the surface then turn and cook on the other side till lightly golden. Brush a little butter on one side and serve.
  • Note: Preparation time 30 minutes, To serve 4
