Importance of attitude (winner’s edge)

(Ayesha, Islamabad)

Ability teaches us how we do, motivation determines why we do and attitude determines how well we do.

The road map towards success is has always been a hectic journey full of anxieties, emotions, failures, courage dedication and hard work. A study attributes to Harvard university found that when a person gets a job or a promotion,85% of the time it is because of his attitude; and only 15% of the time because of intelligence and knowledge of specific facts and figures. This blog is all about that 85% effort which leads to success.

Attribute is the most important word in the English language, it applies to every sphere of life, including one’s personal and professional life .Can an executive be a good executive without good attitude? Can parents, teachers, sales person, employers or employees be good at their roles without a good attitude? The foundation of success regardless of your chosen field; is attitude. That is why business tycoons flourished for this very reason, lagging behind the others. Experiences have shown that human resources are the most valuable assets. People are valuable than assets. Unfortunately human resources are also the most wasted resources. People can be your biggest assets or your biggest liabilities. It is awful to make analogy among human power and resources but, it does make a sense that without human will, determination and hadwork, resources can’t be utilized productively. Uranium the predominant energy factory existed for billions of years but nobody used it, so it was considered scrap. It was the human attitude and desire to make something productive and worth of this radioactive metal.

The query which clicks the mind is that how attitude can be brought up in ones personality. I would like to make a holistic approach to this because we are not just arms, legs, eyes, ears, a heart, and a brain, but a complete human being. The whole person goes to work and the whole person comes to home. Behaviors don’t change. People who are honest at work are honest at home and people who are dishonest at a home are dishonest at work. We take family problems to work and work problems to family. What happens when we take family problems to work? Our stress levels goes up and productivity levels decreases. Personal, professional and social problems are strongly interconnected and impact on each other. It is worth here to mention that separate time is allocated to several daily activities.

Most of our attitudes were shaped during formative years. While we are born with tendencies towards temperaments, there are three factors that largely determine our attitude formation. These are the triple E’s of attitude:Environment, experience and education. Environment consists of home, school, work and society, and economy, religious and political factors. All These environments create a culture, if you go to a shop you will find sales person polite, the supervisor polite, .the manager polite, the owner polite. You go to another shop; you find the sales person rude, the supervisor rude, the manger rude and the owner rude. The same is the case with countries. In countries where there is political uncertainty, people stop thinking long term, and they start thinking short term. These objectives become to fleece everybody and fill their pockets today because if the pockets are full today, they will be more prepared to face uncertainties of tomorrow.

Events and experiences in life determine our attitude. If we have positive experience with a person, our attitude toward him is likely to be positive and conversely negative experiences tend to make us cautious. Experiences and events become reference points in our lives and we draw conclusions which serve as guide lines for future.

Education refers to both formal and informal education. We are drowning in information but starving for knowledge and wisdom. Strategically applied, knowledge translates into wisdom which in turns translates into wisdom. Now a day’s education institutions tend to be more profit earning and lucrative and seems less interested in bringing wisdom and free thoughts in pupils, that’s why the society is gradually in decline of educational doom.
