One common reason for people to turn up their music so loud is so that they can drown out all the surrounding sounds around themselves, or so maybe they could disappear from the world. Another reason is because it could be calming to that person and may take away and problems or stress they may have. Loud music can be cathartic, and it can also elicit a release of adrenaline. Bars and pubs often play loud music so that people talk less and drink more. This can have negative effects on the health of young people (it can affect hearing later in life in addition to health problems arising from drinking too much), whilst at the same time depriving them of opportunities to hone their social skills.
