Skill is not the ladder to success.

There is no doubt that being successful is the dream of every human being. While success is an obvious goal in the whole world, the ways to which it is achieved has been a matter of debate for several years. Two known elements which attribute to success are skill and hard work. Looking deeply into the concept, I believe that hard work is the integral part of success. Skill has nothing to with it. Just by watching television and sitting idle in the home and saying that can bend down success in your knees means you are wrong. According to a recent survey, success earned by hard work was the foremost factor responsible for a contented life. Stephen King said “Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work.” Without enduring endeavor, success is hardly possible. Colin Powell said "A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work."

Margret Mead said “I learned the value of hard work by working hard.” The pivotal role of hard work in achieving success is clear in our daily life. From the time we were small children, and then on into adulthood, we face many problems. As a child, we experience falling down many times and as an adult, we may face financial difficulties. Despite of the mentioned facts, we put our effort to finally attain the success, which in these cases is solving the pertained problem.

Edwin’s definition of genius is quoted to define success very well “One percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” This quote clears the confusion and proves that skill is not the ladder to success. Respected listeners, we must remember that the concept of the hard work is true in the world of science and technology as well. Modern technology and highly acclaimed scientific theories are byproducts of endless endeavor of those who devote their life to achieve success. Venice Lombardi said “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.”The Wright brothers' struggle to invent the airplane is a typical example of the partnership of effort and success. The Einstein's Theory of relativity, the Hawking’s theories in Physics, and great achievements in the medical and pharmacological areas would not have been achieved without hard work. What we consider today as technological advancements of the Information Age are direct results of previous sustained efforts. Outside the world of science, we have also many examples in whom hard work lead people and even countries to success. America’s famous president Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin in the forest. He could not afford a lamp and read borrowed books. And yet by dint of hard work, he rose to be the greatest man of his time. Stalin, the late prime minister of Russia, was the son of a cobbler. Japan, one of the most prosperous countries of the world, was a backward country seventy years ago. This prosperity and development is achieved by the means of hard work.

Booker T. Washington said “Nothing ever comes to one, that is worth having, except as a result of hard work”. The key role of enduring endeavor is even more apparent when it comes to educational and job accomplishments. A descent job is hardly possible to obtain without a good resume, and a good resume is a result of previous hard work. Another example is admission to a high ranked university. It requires that the student have attained the best scores during the years at college; something that is barely possible without making a great deal of effort. In other words, there is an obvious direct link between hard work and success. Now I will quote a saying of a successful man, Michel Angelo, “If people knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery. It would not seem wonderful at all.”

Winston Churchill said “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”In a nutshell, ample concrete evidence firmly confirms that hard work is the key to success. Our own life experience, modern technological advancements, and astonishing accomplishments in education are definite examples of the integrity of attempt and success. According to Harry Golden, "The only thing that overcomes hard luck is hard work." Now I will read some verses of a beautiful and inspiring poem:
“Heights by great man reached and kept,
Were not attained by sudden flight,
They while their companions slept,
Were toiling upwards in the night”

Thank You Very Much!
