Child Labour In Pakistan

(Mumtaz NASH, Sukkur)

Child labour is an important and serious global issue which affects all and sundry countries of the world. Particularly, in Pakistan child labour is commonly found and it is increasing by leaps and bounds. The main factors that cause child labour in Pakistan are: poverty, lack of education, social and economic pressures and irresponsible political system.

Poverty is one of the biggest social issues within Pakistan. It plays a key role in increasing the rate of child labour. Due to poverty children are forced to earn money. They are used as labourers and made to work in various industries. Poverty creates social and economic pressure before the poor children and there are a lot of illegal tasks which are done by the children on account of it.

Pakistan has an ailing educational system. Lack of standard education is another major reason of rapid development of child labour. Most of the people in rural areas have no access to schools and colleges. The children are deprived of their basic right i,e education. Thus the children learn the tricks of trade instead of gaining education and are considered labourers and workers. Due to this reason the illiteracy rate in Pakistan is going to be increased.

Pakistan has been suffering from an irresponsible political system since its establishment. Our political system is poorly arranged. There is no sufficient allowance for the poor and orphans. There are some laws against child labour but unfortunately none of these laws has been put into practice to stop child labour.

However, to eradicate child labour from the country is an urgent need of the hour. There is no better way to prevent child labour than to make education compulsory. To end this menace, first of all parents should send their children to get education rather than sending them to earn money. Besides, the government should reshape the educational system as well as make it free and standardized. The authorities concerned need take strict steps against child labour and the child labour laws must be applied. In this way, we can not only give a great chance to our future builders but also can make our country prosperous.
