Mobilophilia

(Aimen Rafique, Karachi)

Mobile phones and other smart devices are trending in the market on a daily basis. It’s an extremely flourishing industry that has completely digitized our lives; and that too for worse. The sudden rise in the selfie culture and the materialism it promotes is a totally other debate. But for now let us focus on the health hazards caused by the ridiculously excessive use of mobile phones in Pakistan. From toddlers to the aged, all are glued to their cell phones throughout the day. It’s like all of us are suffering from a bad case of mobilophilia. We can’t just get enough of it. Our love and attachment to our phones is soaring as we speak.

Unfortunately, despite of being so well informed and connected we fail to recognize the big health hazards this small device has made us prone to. But unlike us, WHO is taking this very seriously. According to new research RF radiations from the wireless phones is a major reason for head cancers including glioma and acoustic neuroma. Not only that, mobile phones also adversely affect our brain activity by slowing down our reflexes. They disturb sleep patterns whilst increasing the stress levels hence the reason why most of the teenagers nowadays are cranky all the time. In addition to that research has shown an increased risk of traffic accidents, some 3-4 times greater chance of an accident, when mobile phones (either handheld or with a "hands-free" kit) are used while driving due to distraction. Also the constant typing and texting along with prolonged exposure to the mobile phone screens causes eye vision problems and chronic pain in the finger joints.

Moreover the most disturbing problem is that a fetus too is not safe from the harmful effects of this electronic device because pregnant mums so often don’t think about minimizing their mobile usage and hence their baby’s exposure to cell phones. The rays coming out of the phone may even result in birth deformities and a compromised immune system.

Thus, this message goes out to all those people who are always on the phone, to stop gambling their lives and learn about the reasons why increased cell phone use can result in a reduced life expectancy rate. It’s just not worth it.

Not many years ago world existed without cells. People in those days were not always on the phone, they were rather busy living a life. It was possible then and it is very well possible now. All we need is a little self-control and moderation.
