Sahih Bukhari 1917 - The Book Of As-Saum (The Fasting)

Baab Rozay Ke Masail Ka Bayan

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي حَازِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ . ح حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو غَسَّانَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُطَرِّفٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو حَازِمٍ ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، قَالَ : أُنْزِلَتْ : وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الأَسْوَدِ سورة البقرة آية 187 ، وَلَمْ يَنْزِلْ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ ، فَكَانَ رِجَالٌ إِذَا أَرَادُوا الصَّوْمَ رَبَطَ أَحَدُهُمْ فِي رِجْلِهِ الْخَيْطَ الْأَبْيَضَ وَالْخَيْطَ الْأَسْوَدَ ، وَلَمْ يَزَلْ يَأْكُلُ حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَهُ رُؤْيَتُهُمَا ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ بَعْدُ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ ، فَعَلِمُوا أَنَّهُ إِنَّمَا يَعْنِي اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ .

Urdu Translation

ہم سے سعید بن ابی مریم نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا ہم سے ابن ابی حازم نے بیان کیا، ان سے ان کے باپ نے اور ان سے سہل بن سعد نے (دوسری سند امام بخاری رحمہ اللہ نے کہا) اور مجھ سے سعید بن ابی مریم نے بیان کیا، ان سے ابوغسان محمد بن مطرف نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا کہ مجھ سے ابوحازم نے بیان کیا اور ان سے سہل بن سعد رضی اللہ عنہ نے بیان کیا کہ   آیت نازل ہوئی ”کھاؤ پیو یہاں تک کہ تمہارے لیے سفید دھاری، سیاہ دھاری سے کھل جائے“ لیکن «من الفجر» ( صبح کی ) کے الفاظ نازل نہیں ہوئے تھے۔ اس پر کچھ لوگوں نے یہ کہا کہ جب روزے کا ارادہ ہوتا تو سیاہ اور سفید دھاگہ لے کر پاؤں میں باندھ لیتے اور جب تک دونوں دھاگے پوری طرح دکھائی نہ دینے لگتے، کھانا پینا بند نہ کرتے تھے، اس پر اللہ تعالیٰ نے «من الفجر» کے الفاظ نازل فرمائے پھر لوگوں کو معلوم ہوا کہ اس سے مراد رات اور دن ہیں۔

English Translation

Narrated Sahl bin Saud: When the following verses were revealed: 'Eat and drink until the white thread appears to you, distinct from the black thread' and of dawn was not revealed, some people who intended to fast, tied black and white threads to their legs and went on eating till they differentiated between the two. Allah then revealed the words, 'of dawn', and it became clear that meant night and day.
