Abu Darda' reported Allah's Apostle ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) as saying: Is any one of you incapable of reciting a third of the Qur'an in a night? They (the Companions) asked: How could one recite a third of the Qur'an (in a night)? Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) said: 'Say: He is Allah, One' (Qur'an. cxii) is equivalent to a third of the Qur'an.

و حَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ عَنْ مَعْدَانَ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ أَيَعْجِزُ أَحَدُكُمْ أَنْ يَقْرَأَ فِي لَيْلَةٍ ثُلُثَ الْقُرْآنِ قَالُوا وَكَيْفَ يَقْرَأْ ثُلُثَ الْقُرْآنِ قَالَ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ تَعْدِلُ ثُلُثَ الْقُرْآنِ

  شعبہ نے قتادہ سے ، انہوں نے سالم بن ابی جعد سے ، انہوں نے معدان بن ابی طلحہ سے ، انھوں نے حضرت ابو درداء رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے اور انھوں نے نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے روایت کی ۔ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا : " کیا تم میں سے کوئی شخص اتنا بھی نہیں کرسکتا کہ ایک رات میں تہائی قرآن کی تلاوت کرلے؟ " انھوں ( صحابہ کرام رضوان اللہ عنھم اجمعین ) نے عرض کی : ( کوئی شخص ) تہائی قرآن کی تلاوت کیسے کرسکتاہے؟آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا : قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ایک تہائی قرآن کے برابر ہے ۔ "
