حَدَّثَنِي هَارُونُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْأَيْلِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ صَالِحٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ نَوَّاسِ بْنِ سِمْعَانَ قَالَ أَقَمْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ سَنَةً مَا يَمْنَعُنِي مِنْ الْهِجْرَةِ إِلَّا الْمَسْأَلَةُ كَانَ أَحَدُنَا إِذَا هَاجَرَ لَمْ يَسْأَلْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ شَيْءٍ قَالَ فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ الْبِرِّ وَالْإِثْمِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْبِرُّ حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ وَالْإِثْمُ مَا حَاكَ فِي نَفْسِكَ وَكَرِهْتَ أَنْ يَطَّلِعَ عَلَيْهِ النَّاسُ

Urdu Translation

  عبداللہ بن وہب نے کہا : مجھے معاویہ بن صالح نے ( باقی ماندہ سابقہ سند کے ساتھ ) حضرت نواس بن سمعان رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت کی ، کہا : میں ایک سال تک رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ساتھ مدینہ میں مقیم رہا ۔ مجھے سوالات کرنے کے سوا اور کوئی بات ہجرت کرنے سے نہیں روکتی تھی کیونکہ ہم میں سے جب کوئی ہجرت کر لیتا تھا تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے کسی چیز کے بارے میں سوال نہیں کرتا تھا ۔ کہا : ( تو اسی دوران مین ) میں نے آپ سے نیکی اور گناہ کے بارے میں دریافت کیا تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا : " نیکی حسن خلق ( اچھی عادات ) کا نام ہے اور گناہ وہ ہے جو تمہارے دل میں کھٹکے اور تم ناپسند کرو کہ لوگوں کو اس کا پتہ چلے ۔ "

English Translation

Nawwas b. Sam'an reported: I stayed with Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) for one year. What obstructed me to migrate was (nothing) but (persistent) inquiries from him (about Islam). (It was a common observation) that when anyone of us migrated (to Medina) he ceased to ask (too many questions) from Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ). So I asked him about virtue and vice. Thereupon Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) said: Virtue is a kind disposition and vice is what rankles in your mind and that you disapprove of its being known to the people.
