A lethal menace

(Shaheer Ullah Khan, Kharian)

Youth is the most worthy and valuable asset of any nation. It is the spine of any society and holds the true potential and power. Youth is that segment of any country which has the enormous responsibility of holding the country’s reins in the future, and the nation’s prosperity, well being and success lies in it’s hands. Today’s young people are going to replace their elders, tomorrow. This fact highlights the preciousness of the youth and the great responsibility they have to embrace in the future.

It is a crystal clear fact that the stronger the youth the more would be a country’s potential and the more it’s future would be secure. The main strength of the youth lies, from a good personal character to unity among each other. It is a real sorrow to say that our youth’s strength is diminishing with regard to personal character due to many menaces in the society and a negative impact is being engraved upon the young people’s minds.

The most important and attention seeking of these menaces is the growing use of narcotics among a considerable faction of the youth. These intoxicants range from a normal cigarette to more intoxicating drugs such as Heroine and Opium. This habit of consuming drugs has not only put young people’s own lives at risk ,but has also put the future of our beloved country at stake, as with a weak youth thinking of a country’s bright future is no more than a pseudo thought.

Many youngsters consider it their pride to say that; “Yeah I have smoked a cigarette”. The market is stocked with a variety of drugs, with the most popular one among the young, being “Sheesha”. There is a strong misconception that Sheesha is not harmful. The truth is that it is as injurious and poisonous as a cigarette. The inclination towards drugs is making our youth hollow and their energies are being wasted and capability being reduced, which pose a severe threat to a brilliant future of the nation.

How would any body be able to perform the responsibilities that lie upon his shoulders if poison is flowing in his blood streams? Is it possible for some one to be called “responsible” if dizziness and numbness rule the senses? Would not it be unfair to place some drug addict since youth, at a sensitive government post or as a high ranking manager at some industry over, which the country’s economy depends upon?

Most of all, our religion strictly opposes the intake of narcotics.

The Quran says “Satan’s plan is to sow hatred and enmity amongst you with intoxicants and gambling, and to hamper you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. Will you not give up? (5:91)

This tells us very vividly that how destructive narcotics are and hence their prohibition in Islam.

All governments that have been till now, have always had a very strict stance against the use of drugs. Tremendous efforts have been made to curb this menace from it’s roots in our society. Law enforcement agencies with Anti Narcotic Force being at the top of the list- their role is highly appreciable and deserves big commendation. The way their Officers and Jawans have fought to crush this menace is exemplary. And those who laid down their lives while fighting deserve a thousand salutes. Anti Narcotics Force has been the frontline force against drugs since it’s establishment in 1995.Many criminals who dealt in this lethal business have been brought to justice.

It is not only the responsibility of law enforcers to eliminate narcotics from our society, but primarily it lies upon the shoulders of each individual. Our youth should be morally strong enough to resist the temptation towards drugs and hence oppose them. The young should stop their fellows from taking narcotics, and tell them that they are ruining there very own lives. Let it be their homes, schools or workplaces, they should make the drug addicts understand, the danger that they are putting in to, not only their selves but also the whole nation.

In today’s world, media can be an effective way to rip this destructive element off. Television and radio programmes and dramas should be made in order to raise people’s and particularly the youth’s awareness against drugs.

If you know that this house will fall tomorrow, will you let your kids to stay in it? The house whose bases the drug vendors are infecting with termites is where tomorrow their and our generation will live together. They may not be bothered for their own children but we are, and therefore they need to be stopped now!
