The Power of Forgiveness

(zahra mumtaz, Karachi)

Many people will agree with me when I say that forgiving is hard. In fact, it is one of the most difficult things to do – to sincerely forgive a person that has hurt you and let go of the pain they have caused you. To let go and move on from that haunting feeling and memory they have given you.

But if you don't practice forgiveness, you might be the one who pays most dearly. By embracing forgiveness, you can also embrace peace, hope, gratitude and joy. Consider how forgiveness can lead you down the path of physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.

"To err is human; to forgive, divine."
Alexander pope wrote those wise words. In the poem an essay on criticism, part II, 1711, Pope explains that, while anyone can make a mistake, we should aspire to do as God does, that is, show mercy and forgive sinners.

Before we get into why it's so important to forgive, lets first talk about what forgiveness is.

Forgiveness is nothing but ' to let it go'

As stagnant dirty water may cause breeding place for mosquitoes and diseases the same way the bad words or memory caused by some person, kept in your heart for days will only result in hatred, disliking towards that person. The more you hold the more you feel the pain. So, just let it go. Learn to forgive the bad and accept the good. Forget bad, focus on good around you.

Importance of forgiveness:
1. Forgiving is one of Allah SWT’s quality
Allah has promised in the Holy Quran that He will forgive everyone who repent for his sins and mistake. One of Allah’s name is Al Ghafur (the oft forgiving), mentioned more than 70 times in Quran. As said in Quran,

“ and let them pardon and overlook, Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” – An Nur (24:22)
2. Forgiveness is mainly for your benefit, not for the benefit of the person you are forgiving. As long as you are feeling like a victim, you are carrying a heavy burden. Forgiveness allows you to put the burden down. And simply walk away from it Free.

3. Forgiving helps us grow. Once you have forgiven anyone in your life you feel has harmed you, you suddenly find you have more time for thinking good productive and useful happy thoughts instead of negative and useless self-centered complaining.
Remember, forgiveness is a precious gift you give to others and yourself.
