Street crimes in Karachi

(Atiqa zahid, Karachi)

Karachi is the largest city in Pakistan and it is also the country’s financial and industrial hub. The city has a population of over 15 million people and it is growing rapidly. However, Karachi is also known for its high levels of street crime. Every year, thousands of people are mugged, robbed, or assaulted in the city. The police have been unable to effectively control street crime, and the government has failed to take necessary measures to address the issue. Street crimes in Karachi have had a significant impact on the city. They have caused a lot of fear and insecurity among the residents. The police have been unable to control the situation, and the criminals seem to be getting bolder by the day. This has hurt the city's economy and has made it difficult for people to go about their daily lives.

In today's Karachi, mugging and pick-pocketing are booming businesses. According to data, 56,500 cases of street crime have been reported in Karachi during the current year. 19,000 mobile phones were snatched, 104 cars were forcefully taken, and 1,383 bikes were stolen. 35,000 citizens were deprived of their motorbikes during various incidents in the city. 56 people have lost their lives while resisting street criminals and 269 were injured as a result. 303 cases of house robberies have been reported.

The police are often helpless to stop these crimes, and the criminals are often never caught. The Sindh government has failed to control street crimes in Karachi. This has led to a rise in crime and a decline in public safety and this has caused many residents to live in fear. While the police have increased their presence in the city, they have not been able to effectively deter or solve crimes. This has led to a situation where people are afraid to leave their homes, and businesses are suffering. There are many reasons why street crime is on the rise, including poverty, unemployment, and the lack of law enforcement.

Last month, the Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, issued directives. During a meeting on law and order in the province, CM Shah said that “Karachi needs to be cleaned of street criminals,” he said in the meeting. Inspector General Police (IGP)

Ghulam Nabi Memon briefed the CM about special measures taken by the police to curb street crimes. He said that police patrolling and an intelligence-based operation (IBO) are underway to deal with criminals. Police Chief Javed Alam Odho termed a safe city project imperative for a metropolis city. Saying it’s not possible to stop street crimes without a safe city project. However, there has been no decrease in such incidents across the city and the situation is only getting worse day by day.
