Situation Regarding Road Safety In Pakistan

(Maha Sumbal, ISLAMABAD)

According to a report, the rate of road accident in Pakistan is comparatively high than other countries. Every year about 25 to 30 thousand people lose their lives, millions of people get injured or permanently paralyzed in road accidents. It is essential to examine the causes of traffic accidents and support the safety measures taken by the government to reduce the rate of accidents.

Studies show that the major cause of traffic accidents are speeding, careless driving, poor condition of roads and vehicles, overloading, one-way violation, overtaking, breaking signals, untrained drivers and use of mobile phones while driving. The most important cause of the road accident is the rash behavior of road drivers and other user. Over 50% of road accidents occur due to the rash and careless behavior. Therefore, to ensure safety of oneself and others its necessary to change our behavior. It is near to impossible to reduce traffic accidents until right behavior is adopted by road users.

Moreover, majority of people who are involved in road accidents are minors who are careless and don’t have proper training, education and driving license. Due to their careless behavior, they don’t obey laws and signs. Due to ignorance of the traffic rules, they not only put their lives but also lives of others ate stake. In addition to this, wrong parking of vehicles, and turning without indication is another main cause of accidents. In developed countries, the rate of road accidents is rapidly decreasing due to the effective implementation of laws and punishments. However, In Pakistan there are few road safety laws but they are not strictly followed nor the people guilty of violating rules are punished according to law. If law is properly enforced then the rate of traffic accidents can be reduced.
