A Wonderland
(Shaheer Ullah Khan, Kharian)
Pakistan is a country on the
Asian continent which possesses the ability to be called a wonderland, given
that the place is utilized in a proper way. The inhabitants of the Islamic
Republic of Pakistan live on massive reserves of mineral resources and other
than that the geographical features and climatic conditions also contribute
lavishly to the wealth, rather the hidden treasures of the country.
The country’s mountains in the province of Balochistan are abundant with mineral
resources, like gold and copper. Also there are reserves of natural gas. Coal is
found as well in the Mach area. The Saindak and Reko Diq regions contain
considerable reserves of gold and copper. Reko Diq has gigantic amounts of
copper and is rated as the second largest copper reserve of the world. Adding
further, the natural gas fields of the Sui region of Balochistan have fed the
needs of the nation for a long time.
One of the newly talked about asset of the dear country is the Thar coal
reserve. According to official estimates of the government of the Sindh
province, 175 billion tons of coal is spread on an area of 9000 Km2 . It is good
to know that the government has taken initiatives to exploit theses resources,
bestowed by Al-Might Allah. An effective extraction of the hidden fossil fuel
can help in overcoming the country’s power crisis. Also it is expected that the
Thar coal project would generate 60,000 employment opportunities. It would be
appropriate to call the reserves a golden egg. Efforts for the extraction of the
fuel and the development of infrastructure for the project shall be accelerated
so that without any further delay we can be benefited.
Majority of the days in Pakistan are sunny and hence it proves the fact that our
country contains decent opportunities for the generation of solar energy. In
this wake some development has been done but that is very little. Pakistan has
deserts spreading over thousands of square kilometers. These can be suitable for
establishing mega projects of solar power production. Though the installation
cost of these projects can be expensive, but the running costs are negligible.
Our country has about 1040 Km of coastal line, forming a fine prospect for wind
power generation. Projects such as the one at Jhimpir Wind Power Plant have
taken place, but the electricity production over there is very small in
magnitude. Full utilization of the resource shall be made so that the road
towards development can be traveled in a good way. Wind energy has cheap running
cost and it is also environment friendly.
Pakistan also has many rivers and a fine amount of work has been done for the
utilization of this resource in the aspect of power production and irrigational
purpose. Dams like Mangla and Tarbela are generating hydro electricity, but
sometimes it is heard that the installed ability is not wholly used. It should
be made sure that the full capacity be utilized. More damns ought to be built
for catering the rising requirements of the growing population of Pakistan. If
consensus is not being reached among the provinces regarding the construction of
the Kalabagh dam, then other locations for major schemes need to be worked on.
These were the few wonders found in the great state of Pakistan. There are many
other natural resources, in which if interest is taken seriously, they will open
the doors of economic development and prosperity for the people of the country.
Complete advantage can only be accomplished from our resources if the management
from top to bottom is done adequately, and those who are in a position to do
something; they bring some positive change rather than spoiling the national
treasury.
Proper usage of the natural resources will lead to the holding back of poverty
and the living standards of the people of Pakistan will be increased; and the
key towards it, is sincerity!
