Facebook To Introduce Want Button
(Usama Muhammad Noman, Karachi)
Facebook like button got vast
popularity among the users of Facebook and become a sort of popular word among
teenagers who even in their real life events has started using Facebook
language. The like button provided Facebook users to show their likes and
dislikes for a certain statement, image or anything, not only that with the help
of notifications it became possible to know what my friend is liking and
disliking.
Now since when the Facebook has hit with the idea of online shopping store to
provide its 1 billion users a facility to send real physical gifts to their
friends or to buy something for themselves they are also thinking to introduce a
button of WANT. This want button will allow a user to create his wish list and
friends to know in what his friend is interested most.
However, much opposition has been heard about this want feature. Critics to say
that this will affect the privacy concern of a user. Facebook has disclose that
they are working with seven retailers, including lingerie brand Victoria’s
Secret and the American home furnishings store Pottery Barn. And with the help
of the WANT button user will be able to flag their desired products.
Facebook has said to provide the non-fee service to its users when an item is
purchased from the wish list; however, will they do this in future as well or
not is a question? The wish list is created when a user clicks the Want button
in Facebook shopping store, which they call Facebook Collection. The item then
appears in the wish list on user’s timeline and friends of him are also able to
see his wish list.
After disastrous May when billions of dollars were wiped from the market value
of the company Facebook is now looking for new and creative methods to make
money. Also remember that they has already surpass the Google
Colin Sebastian said,
“E-commerce is a great way to monetize internet.”
About the question of compromising user privacy with the Want button Facebook
said, “We never shares or sells personal data and the Want button will be
subject to the same strict privacy controls that are available on the site at
present.” If they will present the Want feature with privacy control then I
think there should be no more questions against this new feature.
