31 Sixes in an ODI
(Arsalan Mujahid Ghouri, Karachi)
Unbelievably 31 sixes hits in
100 overs. You can imagine that how bowler treated and bat smashes the ball.
This was the ODI between Newzealand and India, at AMI Stadium, Christchurch, on
08 March 2009. After that match, many records have been update in record book.
India made 392/4 in small ground and Newzealand replay to this mammoth total
with the score of 334 all out. The match’s total aggregate of 726 is the second
highest score ever made in ODIs (first highest aggregate score record seize in
the match between Australia and South Africa when these two teams made combined
score 872 runs in the famous run chase). 394/4 is the second highest total made
by India in all ODIs. Unbelievably, 31 record sixes hit in this match, 18 by
India and 13 by Newzealand, now second best is 26. 18 sixes in a match equal the
record of most sixes hit by a single team in an ODI.
Sachin Tendulkar made his 43rd ODI century in this match. In all test playing
nation only West Indies soil waiting him to smack a ton there. Otherwise he made
at least one hundred against all test playing nation’s soil in ODIs (Note that
he also made at least one century against all test nations except Bangladesh in
ODIs). It was his 31st hundred in a winning match and he has been involved in
213th ODI wins, in which he averages nearly 57, at a strike rate of almost 90.
This inning also gave him his 58th Man-of-the-Match award, which also is record,
and this record is 12 clear to Sanath Jayasuriya.
Tim Southee, became only the third bowler who concede more than 100 runs in an
ODI. Jessie Ryder made his maiden century and Dhoni, Yuvraj, Raina, Mccullum and
Mills contributed well with the bat too.
India now up 3-0 in the series and one match remain. So Newzealand needs to sort
out the formula to win in dead rubber match which could help them in Test series
to regain momentum.
