In many of the Pakistani
universities, the old segmented degree system has been replaced with BS degree
system, which is more advantageous over the earlier one, as has already been
witnessed in the West. This new system is characterized by many distinct
features which make it adequately superior to the older system.
Some of these features which are worth-mention include a highly systematic
exposure of the student to the subject, internal mode of evaluation and
undertaking a compulsory research work. But unfortunately, in our country, the
system has led to many different practices which are not only inconsistent with
our social and cultural setups but have also contributed to the declining
scholastic aptitude of our graduates.
Internal mode of assessment, e.g., has given way to evils like favoritism, and
gender discrimination and the possibility of an interaction between the teacher
community and the student community that might not be viewed as healthy and
appropriate from a social and cultural standpoint. It is therefore very
necessary that a certain code of conduct may be defined alongside the BS system,
so that the possibility of all unfair practices may be ruled out and high
quality graduates may be produced.
