Load-Shedding: A Hard Nut To Crack

(Mumtaz NASH, Sukkur)

There is no denying the fact that the Pakistanis have used to facing various social issues. Among them load-shedding is at the top. Load-shedding is a common and normal daily event in our country. It has become a menace for the people and disturbed their lives. People have to face a lot of difficulties in doing work as most of their work depends upon electricity. Load-shedding has lagged behind the standard of the industrialization in Pakistan. The hospitals and educational centres have been suffering from the same issue for a long time. The question is, when we are living in the country which is very much blessed with natural resources. We have coal, dams, solar energy, power plants, nuclear energy but despite all, why have we failed to overcome this problem? We have one of the biggest coal reserves of the world. If we use just 2% of the reserve to generate power, we will be able to keep on generating the extra 25000 Mega Watts of power for the next 40 years.

Fortunately we are rich in resources but unfortunately poor in management. The problem with Pakistan has never been resources but only the proper management. Though we have a lot sources to produce electricity at a very large scale, none of them has ever been utilized by the book. The demand of electricity is on increase. Our population is growing rapidly but on the other hand the production of electricity is slow as well as insufficient to meet the needs of the country. In the Summer season the load-shedding is increased up to 10 hours a day in most of the cities and villages. Above all, the point that needs to be considered is; who is the responsible person behind such circumstances in Pakistan? Whether the government or public? Usually we set the government responsible for every task. But in my opinion regarding this issue, first we should see within in order to give an appropriate answer of this question. It is true that some highly authorized personalities/ officers of the government are not sincere to their jobs and they do not utilize the resources to fulfill the needs of the country. Their aim is to fill up their pockets. But it is a fact too that we, the Pakistanis misuse everything presented before us. We also play a key role in the mismanagement and misuse of the resources. We do not pay the electricity bills. We use unfair means to light our homes and shops. We grease the officers’ palm in order to turn on air conditioners and other heavy machinery. Now it is clear to be aware of the responsible one behind the backwardness of Pakistan. The responsible persons are no one else but we are own. Therefore it is an open secret that whatever is going on in Pakistan, it only on account of us.

Load- shedding had not become such a serious matter, if the right policies would have been adopted to get over this issue in its beginning. Sadly, we have not learnt anything from the developed countries. In spite of having unlimited resources we have failed to eradicate the load-shedding from Pakistan. However, it is time to take all the possible steps to get rid of this menace. In this regard, not only should the authorities be sincere but also the people should understand their duties. The authorities concerned must set up more power stations and build more dams so that they may meet the requirements of the country. Besides, they are also requested to find means of generating power by using different resources at cheap rates. Strict laws should also be brought into practice against the misuse of the electricity. Hence, we can end the load-shedding from Pakistan and make our country rich in the management.
