حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ، قَالَتْ : كَانَ الْيَهُودُ يُسَلِّمُونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُونَ : السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ ، فَفَطِنَتْ عَائِشَةُ إِلَى قَوْلِهِمْ ، فَقَالَتْ : عَلَيْكُمُ السَّامُ وَاللَّعْنَةُ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مَهْلًا يَا عَائِشَةُ ، إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الرِّفْقَ فِي الْأَمْرِ كُلِّهِ ، فَقَالَتْ : يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ، أَوَلَمْ تَسْمَعْ مَا يَقُولُونَ ؟ ، قَالَ : أَوَلَمْ تَسْمَعِي أَنِّي أَرُدُّ ذَلِكِ عَلَيْهِمْ فَأَقُولُ وَعَلَيْكُمْ .

Urdu Translation

ہم سے عبداللہ بن محمد نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا ہم سے ہشام نے بیان کیا، انہیں معمر نے خبر دی، انہیں زہری نے، انہیں عروہ بن زبیر نے اور ان سے عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے بیان کیا کہ   یہود نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو سلام کرتے تو کہتے «السام عليك‏.‏» آپ کو موت آئے۔ عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا ان کا مقصد سمجھ گئیں اور جواب دیا کہ «عليكم السام واللعنة‏.‏» تمہیں موت آئے اور تم پر لعنت ہو۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ ٹھہرو عائشہ! اللہ تمام امور میں نرمی کو پسند کرتا ہے۔ عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے عرض کیا: اے اللہ کے نبی! کیا آپ نے نہیں سنا یہ لوگ کیا کہتے ہیں؟ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا تم نے نہیں سنا کہ میں انہیں کس طرح جواب دیتا ہوں۔ میں کہتا ہوں «وعليكم» ۔

English Translation

Narrated `Aisha: The Jews used to greet the Prophet by saying, As-Samu 'Alaika (i.e., death be upon you), so I understood what they said, and I said to them, As-Samu 'alaikum wal-la'na (i.e. Death and Allah's Curse be upon you). The Prophet said, Be gentle and calm, O `Aisha, as Allah likes gentleness in all affairs. I said, O Allah's Prophet! Didn't you hear what they said? He said, Didn't you hear me answering them back by saying, 'Alaikum (i.e., the same be upon you)?
