حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ السُّلَمِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي الْمَوَالِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يُحَدِّثُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُعَلِّمُنَا الِاسْتِخَارَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏كَمَا يُعَلِّمُنَا السُّورَةَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ إِذَا هَمَّ أَحَدُكُمْ بِالْأَمْرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلْيَرْكَعْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ مِنْ غَيْرِ الْفَرِيضَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ لِيَقُلْ:‏‏‏‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْعَظِيمِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِنَّكَ تَقْدِرُ وَلَا أَقْدِرُ وَتَعْلَمُ وَلَا أَعْلَمُ وَأَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوبِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ فَيُسَمِّيهِ مَا كَانَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ خَيْرًا لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي أَوْ خَيْرًا لِي فِي عَاجِلِ أَمْرِي وَآجِلِهِ فَاقْدُرْهُ لِي وَيَسِّرْهُ لِي وَبَارِكْ لِي فِيهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ يَقُولُ مِثْلَ مَا قَالَ فِي الْمَرَّةِ الْأُولَى وَإِنْ كَانَ شَرًّا لِي فَاصْرِفْهُ عَنِّي وَاصْرِفْنِي عَنْهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَاقْدُرْ لِي الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُمَا كَانَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ رَضِّنِي بِهِ .

Urdu Translation

جابر بن عبداللہ رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ   رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ہمیں نماز استخارہ سکھاتے تھے جس طرح قرآن کی سورۃ سکھایا کرتے تھے، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم فرماتے تھے: جب کوئی شخص کسی کام کا ارادہ کرے، تو فرض کے علاوہ دو رکعت نفل پڑھے، پھر یہ دعا پڑھے: «اللهم إني أستخيرك بعلمك وأستقدرك بقدرتك وأسألك من فضلك العظيم فإنك تقدر ولا أقدر وتعلم ولا أعلم وأنت علام الغيوب اللهم إن كنت تعلم هذا الأمر ( پھر متعلق کام یا چیز کا نام لے ) خيرا لي في ديني ومعاشي وعاقبة أمري أو خيرا لي في عاجل أمري وآجله- فاقدره لي ويسره لي وبارك لي فيه وإن كنت تعلم ( پھر ویسا ہی کہے جیسے پہلی بار کہا ) ، وإن كان شرا لي فاصرفه عني واصرفني عنه واقدر لي الخير حيثما كان ثم رضني به» اے اللہ! میں تیرے علم کی مدد سے خیر مانگتا ہوں، اور تیری قدرت کی مدد سے قوت کا طالب ہوں، اور میں تجھ سے تیرے عظیم فضل کا سوال کرتا ہوں، اس لیے کہ تو قدرت رکھتا ہے میں قدرت نہیں رکھتا، تو جانتا ہے میں نہیں جانتا، تو غیب کی باتوں کا خوب جاننے والا ہے، اے اللہ! اگر تو جانتا ہے کہ یہ کام ( جس کا میں قصد رکھتا ہوں ) میرے لیے میرے دین، میری دنیا اور میرے انجام کار میں ۱؎ بہتر ہے، تو اس کو میرے لیے مقدر کر دے، میرے لیے آسان کر دے، اور میرے لیے اس میں برکت دے، اور اگر یہ کام میرے لیے برا ہے ( ویسے ہی کہے جیسا کہ پہلی بار کہا تھا ) تو اس کو مجھ سے پھیر دے، اور مجھ کو اس سے پھیر دے، اور میرے لیے خیر مقدر کر دے، جہاں بھی ہو، پھر مجھ کو اس پر راضی کر دے ۲؎۔

English Translation

It was narrated that Jabir bin ‘Abdullah said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach us Istikharah, just as he used to teach us a Surah of the Qur’an. He said: ‘If anyone of you is deliberating about a decision he has to make, then let him pray two Rak’ah of non- obligatory prayer, then say: Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi ‘ilmika wa astaqdiruka bi qudratika wa as’aluka min fadlikal-‘azim, fa innaka taqdiru wa la aqdir, wa ta’lamu wa la a’lam, wa Anta ‘allamul-ghuyub. Allahumma in kunta ta’lamu hadhal-amra (then the matter should be mentioned by name) ma kan min shay’in khairan li fi dini wa ma’ashi wa ‘aqibati amri, aw khairanli fi ‘ajili amri wa ajilihi, faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li wa barik li fihi. Wa in kunta ta’lamu [O Allah, I seek Your guidance (in making a choice) by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. You have power, I have none. And You know, I know not. You are the Knower of hidden things. O Allah, if in Your knowledge, this matter (then it should be mentioned by name) is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and my affairs, or both in this world and in the Hereafter then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. And if in Your knowledge]. Then saying similar to what he said the first time, except: Wa in kana sharran li fasrifhu ‘anni wasrifni ‘anhu waqdur li al-khair haithuma kana thumma raddini bihi (If it is bad for me then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and ordain for me the good wherever it may be and make me pleased with it).’”
