It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Al-Fitr is the day when you break your fast and Al-Adha is the day when you offer sacrifices.”

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ أَبِي عُمَرَ الْمُقْرِئُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاق بْنُ عِيسَى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ الْفِطْرُ يَوْمَ تُفْطِرُونَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَالْأَضْحَى يَوْمَ تُضَحُّونَ .

ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ   رسول صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: عید الفطر وہ دن ہے جس میں تم لوگ روزہ توڑ دیتے ہو، اور عید الاضحی وہ دن ہے جس میں تم لوگ قربانی کرتے ہو ۱؎۔
