It was narrated that Abu Salamah said: “I asked ‘Aishah about the fasting of the Prophet (ﷺ). She said: ‘He used to fast until we thought he would always fast. And he used to not fast until we thought he would always not fast. I never saw him fast more in any month than in Sha’ban. He used to fast all of Sha’ban; he used to fast all of Sha’ban except a little.’”

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ ابْنِ أَبِي لَبِيدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَعَنْ صَوْمِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَتْ:‏‏‏‏ كَانَ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ قَدْ صَامَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ قَدْ أَفْطَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَمْ أَرَهُ صَامَ مِنْ شَهْرٍ قَطُّ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ صِيَامِهِ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏كَانَ يَصُومُ شَعْبَانَ كُلَّهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏كَانَ يَصُومُ شَعْبَانَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا .

ابوسلمہ بن عبدالرحمٰن بن عوف زہری کہتے ہیں کہ   میں نے ام المؤمنین عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا سے نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے روزے کے سلسلے میں پوچھا تو انہوں نے کہا: آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم روزہ رکھتے یہاں تک کہ ہم یہ کہتے کہ آپ روزے ہی رکھتے جائیں گے، اور روزے چھوڑ دیتے یہاں تک کہ ہم کہتے کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم روزے رکھیں گے ہی نہیں، اور میں نے آپ کو شعبان سے زیادہ کسی مہینہ میں روزے رکھتے ہوئے نہیں دیکھا، آپ سوائے چند روز کے پورے شعبان روزے رکھتے تھے ۱؎۔
