It was narrated that Jabir bin ‘Abdullah said: “We used to recite the Opening of the Book and a Surah behind the Imam in the first two Rak’ah of the Zuhr and the ‘Asr, and in the last wo Rak’ah (we would recite) the Opening of the Book.”

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ مِسْعَرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ يَزِيدَ الْفَقِيرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كُنَّا نَقْرَأُ فِي الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ خَلْفَ الْإِمَامِ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الْأُولَيَيْنِ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ وَسُورَةٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَفِي الْأُخْرَيَيْنِ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ .

جابر بن عبداللہ رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ   ہم ظہر و عصر میں امام کے پیچھے پہلی دونوں رکعتوں میں سورۃ فاتحہ اور کوئی ایک سورۃ پڑھتے تھے، اور آخری دونوں رکعتوں میں صرف سورۃ فاتحہ پڑھتے تھے ۱؎۔
