Mulla and Tulla

(Sarfaraz Hussein, Karachi)

The progress and development of a society depends upon the individuals. As the mental status of the individuals living in the society increases, the society accelerates on the way of Progress and Prosperity. There are a few instruments that can be used to measure the development of a society. I'm going to discuss the two indicators that can tell us where we individually as well as socially stand.

The first indicator that signals about the society is the learned scholars that we call Ulema. When we pronounce the word "Aalim" a religious scholar comes in our mind. I think that every learned person whether he is student of religion or science he is an Aalim in a way. He has the responsibility to address problems of the society. A daily prayers Imam, a doctor sitting in his clinic, an engineer working on a project, an account maintaining accounts and even a primary school teacher in a village all must share the responsibility to change society. Though the influence of all of these varies every one of these is an Aalim and has to play role to change society. One cannot deny that the greater responsibility lies on Mulla which is the learned scholar of religion. Unfortunately the word "Mulla" has lost its significance and importance in our society. The word "Mulla" means highly learned scholar and it is derived from Arabic word "Mawla" which means leader or master. I think that if Mullas of our society play their role sincerely which is bestowed upon them by our great religion then more than 50% of our troubles and queries would have been vanished. It is not rhetoric but true statement.

Now a question arises how the next 50% of our problems can be solved? In my view if we transform our Tullas into a great and sincere policeman then we can live with peace. The word "Tulla" is an Irish word which means hill, but we don't use this word to address hill. Rather we use it to denote Policeman in our society. Police is very important component of our society. They demand respect from us as they are at our service. As their significance is extraordinary so is their responsibility. Societies can touch sky only by improving the law and order and justice system of which Police is a primary component.

In conclusion, Mulla and Tulla are the key components of our society and by giving them respect as well as introducing reforms in them can make our society truly Islamic. How can we introduce reforms in these two components? I will discuss this with you in my next article.
