Drug Addiction in Youth of Pakistan

Get High on Life, NOT on Drugs!

Drug addiction – a state of intoxication, produced by repeated consumption of drugs. The number of drug addicts increasing with the passage of time; it includes both men and women. The majority of drug users are teenagers or the people under age 25. The most common drugs used in Pakistan are Cannabis, Opium, Heroin, Cocaine, Crystal meth/ice, Alcohol etc. Most of the people are taking drugs to feel relaxed, to enjoy the effect, to create pleasure in life, to eliminate boredom etc. but they don’t know how it will affect their lives. It affect people’s health such as heart disease, sleep disorders, brain problems and many other diseases.
Let’s talk about the Youth of Pakistan. Drug addiction is rapidly growing among the youth; due to this they are distracted from their ambitions.

Mostly university students are involved in taking drugs for enjoyment with friends or to eliminate boredom. The first step towards drug addiction is smoking which is very common practice among youngsters. Another thing is that there are many nightclubs and hidden bars are operating in Pakistan which is also a reason of increasing number of drug addicts. These night parties create a bad impact on our society and spoil our young generation.
Pakistan is becoming the most drug affected country; the main reason is the availability of drugs at a cheap rate, which is easily bought by anyone. According to United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Pakistan has 7.6 million drug users which include 78% male and 22% females. One of the research stated that people who inject drugs are more likely to acquire HIV/AIDS positive than the rest of the people. More than 800,000 people use heroin regularly. Some people want to quit but due to lack of treatment facilities in rehabilitation center of our country they are unable to quit.

What we can do?
Those who are drug addicts should accept the situation and try to change their life. The support of family, close friends and community can help a drug addict to quit. It is a responsibility of parents to keep an eye on their children especially when they are on teenage phase of life. The closeness towards the religious activities is the best way to motivate you to avoid bad practices which are forbidden in Islam. It is a responsibility of government to banned illegal drugs trades, nightclubs, bars in Pakistan and improves treatment facilities in health care centers regarding drug addicts. Educational institutions and media should create awareness programs about drugs and its impact on health and society. It is concluded as Drugs or Life? CHOICE IS YOURS...
