Stealing one of the grave sins in Islam

(Seerat Shahina, )

Most of us have stolen anything when we were small children or even as adults. The child, of course, is usually unaware of the crime until their elders force them to put back the candy or whatever bright object was picked up in the store or elsewhere.

When a person takes something that belongs to somebody else without permission and his knowledge is stealing. The stolen object can be as small as pen or as big as car. It can be taken from some store or from someone's home, but either way, it's stealing. In common usage, there's no practical difference in stealing and theft. Taking of another person's property or services or scrap money without that person's permission with the intent to deprive the rightful owner of It. theft is a broad term that can cover a wide variety of criminal offenses, like shoplifting and stealing a motorcycle are both forms of theft.

We sometimes casually take some items of stationery from office for our kids or use office printer to make hundreds of copies of our own. Swiping stationary items and the like can really hit company's profit. Misuses of time when an employee is paid for time, he/she did not work full time duty. This usually happens when employees are not working while on job.Petty stealing is often difficult to detect. So, even if one thinks that no one will notice the tea bags going missing or snacks disappearing from the breakfast room. it is still immoral and considered as stealing.

Although we know it is wrong, statistics show that there are some people who can’t seem to resist the urge to stealing. An employee is more likely to steal from a business than an outsider. Information theft is very common, stealing product designs, formulas, trade secrets, confidential data, and other proprietary information can be a huge problem for many businesses, especially in the digital age.

Stealing may be prompted by jealousy, low self-esteem, or peer-pressure. Social issues like feeling excluded or overlooked can also prompt stealing. People may steal to prove their independence, to act out against family or friends, or because they don’t respect others or themselves.

Some kids steal because their friends or family members do it or because they might have been dared. They might believe their friends will like them more if they steal. Doing something for these reasons is called peer pressure. Some kids steal because they feel something is missing in their lives. What's missing may be love or attention. Or simple things like food and clothing. They may be angry, sad, scared, or jealous. They might steal as a way to deal with the situation. But stealing won't fix what's missing.

Theft is a big issue in our society. That’s why people put locks on the doors of their houses and lock cars. Some install alarm systems and secret cameras, etc. Govt. and organizations install security lighting around r buildings for protection.

It is observed that people commit crimes due to poverty. Destitution sometimes makes a man lose his sense of moral values and he is more inclined to dishonesty and stealing when he is in difficult economic conditions. But we cannot accept that poverty and destitution are the sole causes of crime. Some people in spite of their straitened circumstances are not at all inclined towards injustice and crime and prove their integrity by fulfilling their obligations with honesty.

Stealing has not only legal consequences, but also social and personal consequences. Depending on what type of theft one is engaged in, legal punishment can be severe, ranging from restitution to court ordered counseling and imprisonment.

According to the Holy Quran, theft is forbidden in Islam. According to sayings of Prophet Muhammad, (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) “Allah, the most Gracious has condemned stealing and has prescribed very severe legal punishment through Islamic law for a thief, is to cut off the thief’s hand.” The following verses in the Qur’an which shed light on stealing:

“And eat up not one another’s property unjustly (in any illegal way e.g., stealing, robbing, deceiving, etc.), nor give bribery to the rulers (judges before presenting your cases) that you may knowingly eat up a part of the property of others sinfully.” 2:188

“As to the thief Male or female, cut off his or her hands: a punishment by way of example, from Allah, for their crime: and Allah is exalted in power. “ 5:38

In a few Muslim countries they implement the punishment according to Quran and cut off the hand of thief. Iran's Islamic penal code says theft "on the first occasion" is punishable by the amputation of four fingers of the right hand. Iranian authorities have defended amputation as the best way to deter theft
.
Saudi Arabia's Islamic law calls for the amputation of the right hand for theft. The kingdom executes murderers, rapists and drug smugglers, usually by public beheading.

In Pakistan whoever commits theft shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both.

Sin which is certainly a greater one is stealing or thievery. In non-Muslim countries also the criminals are not let off with a sermon on moral values. Criminals are imprisoned and accorded various punishments.

All praises are due to Allah. We praise Him, seek His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil which is within ourselves and from the evil in our actions. Whoever Allah guides, none can send him astray; whoever Allah sends astray, none can guide him.

In general, someone who steals is not a person with self-esteem, not trustworthy, he is not morally upright & honest. Stealing is a such crime and there are enormous consequences to face for even if it may involve a very small thing.
