“Being unwanted, unloved,
uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a
much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.”
― Mother Teresa
Moral depravity and poverty are considered to be the text book examples of cause
& effect, latter being the cause. However, the two terms happen to be quite
interchangeable in their nature, and we can equally argue that Moral depravity
is in fact, the root cause of poverty. But before we proceed, first we need to
establish the definition of Poverty. Although poverty is taken in economic
jargon usually, here, by poverty we mean the Poverty of Humanness. First of all,
consider the materialistic approach which has deeply entrenched its roots in our
society. Our notions of social contact, care, love, loyalty are governed by the
status/post/wealth of others eliminating the humane fabric from our society. The
simplicity of the Pious Caliphs has been replaced by VIP culture, the teachings
of Holy prophet to “Abstain thyself from accumulation of Worldly gains” have
been replaced by Swiss Bank Accounts. Secondly, lawlessness, corruption and
barbarism are rampant rendering us not to be much different from the “Pharaohs”
of the Biblical Past. Recently the heart rending murder of a youth, just on the
whim of a high ranking Politician’s son, depicts how the atrocious and savage
nature prevalent in our society has completely eradicated any notion of
humanness left in us. To conclude, the extent to which we are depraved from
morality is magnanimous and as explained, its implications have caused our
society to suffer from poverty; poverty of humanness, poverty of law, poverty of
a welfare society and most of all, the poverty to fall from the zenith of
humanity.
