Independence is Earned
(Mushtaq Ahmad Kharal, Jatoi)
Independence is a blessing of
God but it costs much. We, the Pakistani can understand it better than any other
else. There is a series of sacrifices, blood shedding and hard ships before our
independence. It would be injustice to take it for granted. It is really earned
not got free of cost. Slavery is the worst condition in which a man is caged and
chained without committing any sin. Only these nations can feel the Joy of
freedom which remained in bondage for countless years.
“Independence is hard earned and hard maintained”
After 67 years we are not still free people .We are not in a position to decide
independently. Our decisions are made in Washinton or London. For more than 40
years we remained under military rule and all our democratic governments
remained under the threat of army all the time. In spite of physical freedom, we
are spiritually and morally slaves of western civilization .We got the country
for the free preaching of our religion but later we forgot our real aim and our
religion Islam is under the target of bitter criticism by the west. We got
Islamic Democratic Pakistan but now we have only Pakistan. Democracy never
flourished in Pakistan and we never tried to apply practically in a Pakistan. We
forgot the real meanings of freedom and the result is our humiliation. We are
declining day by day in every field of life.
Let us turn the pages of the history of Pakistan. It is a long struggle of mind
and body. We got it after the 90 years of unrest toil. Arguing and pleading with
the people who were prejudice against the Muslims. Strong opposition both from
Hindus and the British tested the mettle of the Muslims. Quad’s own life came
under the threats of assassination. But he did not move. Countless people lost
their lives, property and near and dear ones during this long journey of
independence. We heavily paid for it. Our every house suffered during migration.
The mishap of the Independence Train is a tale of human frailty and sorrow.
Tragic incident regarding religious belief occurred throughout this chapter. We
faced a lot of heart breaking challenges after getting independence. There was a
challenge of making future constitution of Pakistan and after 9 years we were
able to constitute our first constitution. Water problem was another problem
which was somehow settled in 1960 by Indo pak agreement. Most of our record
remained in India and we had to prepare it again. The problem of rehabilitation
was not easy one. Financial condition of the country at that time is not worth
mentioning. India refused to give us our due share and we struggled hard to
overcome our difficulties. At that the Quaid said,
“The destination has been achieved but the struggle was not over .The new state
that emerged had to face many problems of gigantic magnitude”
Now look at the long and continuous struggle of Kashmiri people. They are not
fighting for property or wealth. Their struggle is not for rule. They just want
independence. They want freedom; freedom of thought and freedom of heart. They
are paying numberless sons, countless daughters. Why? Just only for
independence. Their sons are being slaughtered and their sisters and daughters
are being raped. It is what the freedom demands. The people of philistine are
being treated high handed. They are considered below the level humanity. They
really know the price of independence.
All the states and nation in the worlds which got freedom and independence went
through the period of trials and tribulations. Rarely, there is any mention of a
nation which got freedom without pains. Independence through dialogues on table
talks is unknown in the whole history of the world.
If we look at the other aspects of this topic ‘personal independence’ we can
also maintain that it is achieved after a long and ardours toil. Michal Lord
says, “Depending is rather easy while independence is a difficult task”.
The sum and substance of all this discussion is that “Without moral and
intellectual independence, there is no anchor for national independence. (David
Bon-Gurion). Without freedom of thought and expression, it is meaningless.
Without pains and penalties, no one values independence. It is the game of
nerves. It is the fight for right and right is always might. A free and an
independent man can build his character strong and energetic .He can prune his
potential according to his will. The blessing of freedom can be realized when it
promises gradual change in mental outlook. A bird in cage yearns for freedom
more than anyone in the world .A captive soldier can feel the worth of freedom.
I would like to make an end with the memorable quote of Hazrat Umar (R.A),
“Your mothers gave you birth free, no one can snatch your right of freedom”.
