More than 5,000 children are dying in Punjab every year because of untimely or unaffordable treatment of cardiac conditions. The Chief Minister Heart Surgery Program specifically addresses this emergency by enhancing access to specialty care, physical infrastructures of the hospitals, and by instilling an advanced digital surveillance platform.
Purpose of the Chief Minister Heart Surgery Program
The main aim of the Chief Minister Heart Surgery Program is to make sure that not a single child in Punjab will be victimized by not taking care of cardiac health in time. The program provides free heart surgery and after surgery services of children and also develops long term capacity within the healthcare system by upgrading the number of cardiac surgeons and trained medical personnel.
The program has been implemented in major cities such as Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi in its initial stages. Surgeries will be conducted in six chosen government and private hospitals. The second phase of the project would expand life-saving coverage to other districts of Punjab.
Child Surgery Cards – Access to Free Treatment
Eligible children under the Children Heart Surgery Program receive special Child Surgery Cards. These cards are used to:
- Confirm eligibility for the program
- Facilitate hospital admission and treatment
- Ensure coverage of all surgery-related costs by the government
- If space is unavailable in a public hospital, the child will be referred to a partnered private facility, ensuring that no eligible case is delayed or denied.
Online Dashboard of CM Children Heart Surgery Program
The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has developed a powerful online dashboard which is a critical feature of the CM Children Heart Surgery Program. It is a centralized, web-based solution that facilitates effective control and monitoring of all the patients all along the course to recovery.
Key functions of the dashboard include:
- Patient Registration – Secure and organized electronic medical record (EMR) management
- Urgency Assessment – Prioritization of critical cases through automated triage
- Clinical Diagnosis – Timely and accurate recording of diagnostic data
- Scheduling – Seamless appointment and surgery scheduling across all hospitals
- Procedure Tracking – End-to-end monitoring of surgeries and treatment progress
This digital platform ensures transparency, reduces administrative delays, and enables real-time decision-making across all participating institutions.
Comprehensive Pediatric Cardiac Care
Heart surgery program by the Chief Minister is not restricted to surgeries only. It contains a comprehensive pediatric cardiac care. The care model incorporates dedicated wards of the heart, High Dependency Unit (HDU) and child friendly play areas. Another area of the program is hiring of more specialized surgeons, nurses, and support staff necessary to increase the demand.
A New Chapter in Public Health
The Children Heart Surgery Program is an impressive demonstration of what government healthcare can achieve by connecting a network of both public and private hospitals and leveraging advanced technology together with making treatment available entirely free of cost.
CM Children Heart Surgery Program is not merely a medical service, but also a promise to a mother or father in Punjab that their child indeed counts, and that help is now just around the corner.
