The Importance of CNIC Name Correction
Your CNIC signifies your national identity. It is linked to your bank records, passport, tax records, and your SIM cards, too. If you face any name spelling mistakes in your CNIC, then it would be a big hurdle. For example, if your CNIC reads “Mohammad Ali” while your passport background reads “Muhammad Ali,” you might run into difficulties when attempting to verify identity for things like citizenship, travel, or banking.
To avoid complications, NADRA has simplified the CNIC correction process and made it simple for citizens to correct spelling errors, adjust names after marriages, or use a court order to update a name with responsibility.
NADRA CNIC Name Correction Procedure
To correct the name on your NADRA CNIC, you can visit your nearest NADRA Registration Center (NRC). Below is the procedure:
Go to a NADRA Center
First, visit your local NRC with your CNIC and supporting documents (like birth certificate, educational certificate, or marriage certificate, if applicable).
Get a Token
Once at the counter, ask for a token to modify your CNIC data or CNIC name.
Biometric Verification
Your fingerprints and photo will be taken again to confirm your identity.
Data Entry and Review of Form
The NADRA officer will edit your data and request that you confirm the correction of the name and print the form.
Attach Supporting Document
Join the documents that justify the change in the name (educational certificate, Nikah Nama, or court order).
Pay form Fees
NADRA charges what is called a “processing fee” - the fee is determined by the type of CNIC and urgency (Normal, Urgent, or Executive).
Submit Form and Receipt
After you have signed the form and submitted it, the official will return a receipt that contains a date on which you can expect to receive the new CNIC.
In general, normal CNICs are handed out around 10 to 15 working days from when the application was submitted, and for urgent applications, it is faster.
Online Name Correction on CNIC: Is it Possible?
Many Pakistanis are looking for the option to correct their name on their CNIC records online. It is important to know that NADRA has provided a limited name correction option online. They have a strict /limited option through Pak-Identity for people living abroad, and there is also a limited online option for some changes, such as address correction or photo changes. However, name correction on the CNIC record generally requires that you be verified in person due to biometrics and document verification.

- Register for an account and log in.
- Complete the application correction request form.
- Upload required documents.
- Book an appointment for biometric verification at your nearby NADRA facilitation center.

CNIC Name Correction Documents Required NADRA
NADRA may request one or more of the following, depending on the reason for the name correction:
- Matriculation certificate or degree with the correct spelling.
- Birth certificate from the Union Council.
- Nikah Nama or marriage certificate (in case of name change due to marriage).
- Affidavit or court order (in case of legal name change).
- Father's CNIC copy.
