Why Petrol Price Increases Rs. 2.02 Today?

Published: Monday, September 28, 2026

Petrol price in Pakistan today has gone up by Rs. 2.02 per litre, from Rs. 389.28 to Rs. 391.30 as notified by the Petroleum Division for 26 to 28 September 2026. The PSO petrol price in Pakistan follows this same notified rate, like every other pump in the country. High-speed diesel was cut by Rs. 3.59 to Rs. 408.53.

Why Petrol Price Increases Rs. 2.02 Today?

Here is why the price increases:

  • Higher shipping and premium costs: Import premiums and freight charges rose to $16.36 per barrel from $14.12. This was the main reason for the increase.
  • Higher import cost: The import cost of petrol went up to Rs. 280.64 per litre from Rs. 278.72.
  • Crude itself did not jump: The average international today petrol price actually dipped slightly, to $129.54 per barrel from $130.73. The rise came from freight and premiums, not from the oil rate.
  • Prices follow global rates closely: Pakistan sets fuel prices using a rolling seven-day average of international prices so global changes reach the pump within days.
  • Middle East tension: The conflict in the region and disruption near the Strait of Hormuz keep oil and shipping costs unstable.
  • Pakistan imports most of its oil: Global price changes hit local pumps very quickly.
  • Taxes stay high: About Rs. 114 per litre in government taxes keeps pump prices high even after small drops in crude rates.
  • The dollar factor: Fuel is bought in US dollars so a weaker rupee makes imports more costly.

Economic impact:

  • Higher freight and transport costs make food, groceries and daily supplies more expensive.
  • Daily commuters feel the pinch first but a Rs. 100/litre discount on limited monthly fuel helps low-income drivers of bikes, rickshaws and small cars.
  • Costlier fuel adds to inflation and household budgets.
  • A bigger oil import bill also puts pressure on the dollar supply.

Final thought:

Rs. 2.02 looks small next to the total price, but it shows how closely Pakistan's fuel prices follow global oil freight and the dollar. Petrol prices are changing day by day under the new review system and they can fall as easily as they rise. A day earlier petrol was cut by 84 paisas. This price is valid only until 28 September so it is worth checking the notified rate each day.
