Surah Falaq - سورة الفلق
Surah Falaq is the 113th chapter of the Holy Quran. The surah comprises five verses and is, perhaps, one of those short yet weighty surahs recited for seeking protection from the evil of Allah (SWT). This Surah is also recited for the evil eye. It is coupled with Surah Nas as Al-Mu'awwidhatayn (The Two Refuge-Seeking Surahs) because both are recited for refuge-seeking from any harm.
Themes and Meaning of Surah Falaq
The surah begins, "with seeking the refuge "from the Lord of the beginning of day (Rab al-Falaq) because the power of Allah (SWT) is over darkness and light. The term Falaq refers to the opening of the day and has connotations of hope, relief, and divine intervention from calamities.
Protection Against Evil Forces
One of the most important concerns of Surah Falaq is seeking refuge from unseen harms. The verses consider all the evils of:
- Created things: Harm coming from creatures, disasters, or calamities.
- Darkness of night: Dangers that arise under the cover of darkness.
- Magic and envy: Protection against black magic and the evil eye, both of which were prevalent somewhat even by the time of the Prophet (PBUH).
Recitation's Power
Muslims recite it in their everyday prayers, before sleeping, and at times, they are extremely distressed. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) always recited the Surah Falaq along with Surah Nas to emphasize its importance to seeking protection. Its words act as a protective shield in the Divine narrative, nobbling one's faith against truths regarding evil-doing, that is to say, really serving as protection against weakness of the faith.
