The power regulatory authority stated in its notification that the refund was decided on account of variation in fuel charges for March 2025 in the approved tariff of the power company and to be passed on to the consumers in the billing month of June 2025.

The decision would provide Rs4 billion in relief to KE consumers.

As per Nepra's directives, the notification shall apply to all the consumer categories except lifeline consumers, domestic protected consumers, electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS) and prepaid electricity consumers of all categories who opted for pre-paid tariff.

It also directed the KE to show the adjustment separately in the consumers' bills on the basis of units billed to the users, in the respective month to which the adjustment pertains.

Separately, the Nepra also notified to hike electricity prices up to Re0.93 per unit under the FCA for April for consumers of other Discos across the country.

According to the notification, the increase was decided as the national average uniform FCA in the approved tariff of the ex-Wapda distribution companies.

It directed the Discos to reflect the fuel adjustment in respect of April 2025 in the billing month of June and show figures separately in the consumers' bills.

The move would impose a financial burden worth Rs11 billion on the consumers.

Earlier today, it emerged that the government decided to introduce sweeping energy reforms that include offering 7,000 megawatts of surplus electricity to agriculture and industry at competitive rates.

Leghari confirmed that negotiations with the IMF have been underway for six months to secure approval for the plan to sell surplus electricity.

The government is currently sitting on a 7,000MW power surplus, which it intends to sell to the agriculture and industrial sectors at a flat rate of 7 to 7.5 cents per unit — without subsidies.

With the current administration retaining net metering for solar energy users, it plans to introduce a more transparent net billing system.
