1. Xenarthra: A Remarkable Mammalian Group

A small part of its body is colored, the rest of its body seems almost transparent and you can clearly see structures resembling an X-ray. Originally from freshwater habitats, this fish is swift and easy to keep in a tank and therefore is popular among aquarists.

3. Xenopus: The African Clawed Frog

Xenopus popularly referred to as the African clawed frog is a genus of aquatic frogs endemic to Sub-Saharan Africa region. These amphibians are named for the small claws on their hind feet that they use to shred their food. Some species of Xenopus have been well established to be utilized in scientific research especially in genetics and development biology.

4. Xenops: A Tiny Tropical Bird

The xenops is a small bird from the tropical parts of Central and South America. This bird is from the ovenbird family, which is easily identifiable by a short tail that slightly sticks out in the back, and its foraging pattern. It feeds on insects, and is similar to the woodpecker as it chucks bark from trees. It’s a treat for birders and is vital in the ecosystems it occupies.

5. Xerus: The African Ground Squirrel

Xerus is the group of ground squirrels native to Africa. They are day active and have habitated at open country grasslands and desert regions where they build vast tunnels. There are Xerus species and they are very sociable animals which make them move in groups while looking for food. Mobility and good hearing and sight assists them avoid their predators in their unforgiving habitats.

All of these animals are beneficial in their own way in the ecosystems they inhabit – some being ‘nature’s pest controllers’, some ‘nature’s seed dispersers’ or being the ‘food’ for the bigger animals. Indeed, acquiring the information about these less familiar species makes one more aware of the importance of conservation of their living places.

Rare animals whose names start with “X” are few, but their history is not less exciting as any other animal history. From the transparent X-ray tetra fish to the evolution marvel of Xenarthra these animals are perfect examples of nature’s inventive genius. Studying similar animals extends knowledge of the world and encourages interest in the various miracles of life on the planet.
